Technical drawings make some really cool wall art

A few days ago, I noticed a patent drawing for a double loop play set for sale for around $30 U.S. I thought it would be nice to have a few patent drawings to add another aspect to my diecast car collection.

But, I sure as hell wasn’t going to pay someone $30 for the drawing. Now, don’t get me wrong, the people selling these drawings have as much right as anybody to make a living. But, anyone can get a PDF copy of a patent for free from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The reason people obtain and sell these drawing is that, with limited exceptions, patents aren’t copyrightable.

However, finding a particular drawing can require a little work. But, the USPTO has a public database that is searchable by patent number or by keyword. Fortunately, the people selling the drawings usually leave the patent number on the image. So, it you see a patent drawing being sold on the internet, there’s a pretty good chance the seller left the patent number on it. I suppose leaving the U.S Patent Office and patent number on the print gives it an air of authenticity.

I was curious to what other drawings I could find, so I compiled a list of the drawings I found. I’m pretty sure there are scores, if not hundreds or thousands of drawings I haven’t found. If you find a drawing not on my list, leave me a link in the comments and I’ll add it to the post.
