FIF: 69 Dodge Charger Daytona

A NASCAR original bad ass

The1969 Dodge Charger Daytona is one of the most iconic muscle cars to ever hit the asphalt. After a lackluster 1968 NASCAR series, Dodge engineered the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona to win races in NASCAR.

On Sept. 4, 1969, Richard Brickhouse won the inaugural Talladega 500 in my home state of Alabama. Unfortunately for Brickhouse, that was the only NASCAR race he ever won. Nine months later, the Daytona became the first car to break the 200 mph barrier in NASCAR when Buddy Baker topped out of 200.448 mph at a test session at Daytona on May 24, 1970.

I’ve recently become a fan of M2Machines 1:64 diecast cars. They’re well made, highly detailed and exceptionally easy to take apart and swap out tires.

I bought a M2M Hurst Flower Power livery ‘69 Daytona at Wal-Mart for around $7. I actually liked the tan and red livery, but I decided to take this car apart, strip it down and do a custom paint job as well as a tire swap to give the model that classic Daytona look.

I encountered a few minor problems when I disassembled the model and stripped it down. But, I’ll detail that in my Wednesday, Jan. 11, project update post.

Until then, check out this post on the ‘69 Dodge Charger Daytona by Bradley Iger at Street Muscle Magazine.
